Vern Rutsala (1934-2014) was an award-winning poet known for his reflections on people, places, and daily experience in the American heartland. He taught creative writing at several colleges and universities, and during his long career has earned two a Guggenheim Award, the Pushcart Prize, the Norwest Poetry Prize and the Oregon Book Award, among others. Originally from Idaho, he has lived in Portland, Oregon for more than forty years.
